Although many important discoveries regarding the psychological significance of fingerprint patterns have been made, the main thrust of scientific Dermatoglyphics research in the latter half of the twentieth century has been directed into genetic research and the diagnosis of chromosomal defects. Over the last thirty years or so, more than four thousand papers have been written on the significance of skin-ridge patterns!

The current state of medical Dermatoglyphics is such that the diagnosis of some illnesses can now be done on the basis of Dermatoglyphics analysis alone and currently, several Dermatoglyphics researchers claim a very high degree of accuracy in their prognostic ability from the hand’s features.

Dr. Marcello Malphigi (1628-1694) noted in his treatise; ridges, spirals and loops in fingerprints.

Dr. Nehemiah Grew (1641-1712) presented Finger Prints, Palms and Soles An Introduction To Dermatoglyphics to the Royal Society.

Sir Henry developed the Henry Classification System between the years 1896 to 1897. The Henry Classification System was to find worldwide acceptance within a few years. In 1887 a commission was established to compare Anthropometry to the Henry Classification System.

Dr. Francis Galton published his book, “Fingerprints”, establishing the individuality and permanence of fingerprints. The book included the first classification system for fingerprints: Arch, Loop and Whorl.

Dermatoglyphics Research Pioneers

Noel Jaquin (1893-1974) was one of the most important pioneers in the development of chirological diagnosis in this century, his written works spanning a time period of some thirty-two years. Although he is most important as a pioneer within the fields of health analysis and sexual and emotional evaluation from the hand, he has contributed something to all aspects of the chirological art. His work is as a broad canvas with a lightly sketched image, outlining the breadth of scope of the diagnostic potential of the hand.

Beryl Hutchinson wrote two books on hand analysis the second book Your Life in Your Hands from 1967, is widely acknowledged as being a first class chirological work. She conducted much of her own research and, like Jaquin, was particularly concerned with the significance of dermatoglyphics patterns and the manifestation of physical ill-health in the hand. She also studied the palmar signs of vitamin and mineral deficiencies and made extensive studies of anatomy and physiology in order to demonstrate how this supports the interpretation of the hand.

Dr Julius Spier Psycho-Analytic Chirologist published “The Hands of Children” he made several significant discoveries especially in the area of psycho-sexual development and the diagnosis of imbalances and problems in this area from the patterns of the hands.

Dr. Harold Cummins & Dr. Charles Midlo coined the term “Dermatoglyphics”. They showed that the hand contained significant Dermatoglyphics configurations that would assist the identification of mongolism in the new-born child.

They also researched the embryo-genesis of skin ridge patterns and established that the fingerprint patterns actually develop in the womb and are fully formed by the fourth foetal month.
